The Role of Newspapers in the Indian Struggle for Freedom
Indian Freedom Struggle is an important part of every exam syllabus. In Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level exam it has the same relevance. Following we are presenting an important list of Newspapers with their editors. We also described their role in the Indian Freedom Struggle. It is an important topic in the General Study Section.
The press in India was established by the Portuguese. The first book was printed in India in 1557 AD by the clergy of Goa. The modern Indian press began with the publication of a newspaper by William Bolts in 1766 AD. The first newspaper was published by James Augustus Hickey in 1780 AD.
The first newspaper published in English by an Indian was the Bengal Gazette of Gangadhar Bhattacharyya. In the history of journalism, he made Wokingham a reflection of the people. Raja Ram Mohan Roy started publishing newspapers of progressive national nature.
Newspapers infused new energy into the Indian freedom struggle. Through this, the intellectuals of the society started keeping the evils of the British and their objectives in front of the public. Dada Bhai Naoroji, Rajani Palme dutt, Romesh Chunder Dutt etc. people put the economic objectives of the British in front of the Indians. As a result, Indians started opposing British policies.
