The President of India: An Introduction

• The President of India is the head of state. The President is the formal head of the executive, legislative, and judiciary system of India and is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces. 
  
• Article 53 of the Indian Constitution provides that the President may exercise their powers directly or through a subordinate authority.
  
• In practice, all the executive powers are vested in the President with exceptions.
  
• If the posts of President and vice-president fall vacant, the Chief justice of India acts as President.
  
• President got immune from criminal proceedings during his/her tenure, however, civil proceedings can be carried out.
  
• President can pardon the death sentence.
  

Facts about the President of India:

• The only president who was elected to the office of president twice: Dr Rajendra Prasad
  
• The two presidents who died in office: Dr Zakir Husain (1969) & Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed (1977)
  
• Neelam Sanjeev Reddy was the only candidate elected unopposed.
  
• Pratibha Devi Singh Patil was the first woman president of India.
