Well, it’s one hell of a story. It was my first interview ever.

It was a pool drive in October 2021.

There were 2 rounds.

  1. Aptitude Round
  2. HR+ Tech Interview

The aptitude round was easy and those who cleared the first round shortlisted for the interview round on the next day.

Interview Round

Almost 300–400 students were shortlisted for interviews and there were around 5–6 panels. My name was called after 2–3 hours of wait. I entered the room.

My interviewer was a male in his mid-thirties.

Interviewer: You, XYZ?

Me: Yes, Sir.

He greeted me and I reciprocated. He told me his name and signaled me to sit. I sat down.

He asked me to fill in my details on some paper.

And he started with a very cliched question.

Interviewer: Tell me about yourself.

Me(in my stuttering voice): Hello Sir, I am XYZ. I am pursuing my B.Tech in Computer Science from ABC. I am currently in my 4th year. I am very enthusiastic about AI and Machine Learning. I also did industrial training in Machine learning with Python in my second year. I love to explore new places and read history. I also love to do coding in C, C++, and Python, and I am still learning(I added this line to save my ass because I thought he will be going to throw some very difficult questions after hearing that I love coding. )

Interviewer: Are you okay with writing code on paper?

Me: Sure Sir.

Interviewer: Before this, just tell me a basic concept of OOPS.

Me: Yes Sir, First is Inheritance, Abstraction, Polymorphism and after that, I blanked out.

The fourth concept just skipped my mind and I tried hard to recall but it didn’t work. I just told him sorry sir, I can’t remember it. Meanwhile cursing myself in my mind.

Interviewer(in Hindi): You don’t even know the basic OOPs concept, how will you write the code. (in a very informal manner).

After hearing this, my confidence level plummeted to zero levels and I knew that I have messed up my interview and I was not going to make it.

But still, I requested him to give me a chance but he moved on to the next question.

Interviewer: So, what is your final year project?

Me: Sir, We are implementing a language server for glsl/hlsl shader language and explained it thoroughly for the next 2 minutes.

I was fumbling a lot and taking frequent pauses when I was explaining to him my project but I wore a fake smile during the whole interview but deep down I knew It won’t work.

Interviewer: So, what are the trending technologies right now?

Me: Sir, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Internet of Things(IoT).

He seemed convinced.

Interviewer: What are the phases in SDLC?

Me: Sir, there are 6 phases in SDLC.

I started explaining to him every phase thoroughly but he stopped me after 3rd and asked what comes after this phase and this phase and I told him correctly.

(He seemed convinced).

Interviewer: Thanks, that’s all. Do you have any questions for me?

Me: Yes sir, if I get selected today then how long it will take to get the offer letter?

I just asked this question merely for formality because I was sure that I am not getting selected.

Interviewer(with a devious smile): Well, it depends on the HR department. I can’t tell you about this.

And in my mind, I was thinking that he must be thinking that how can he ask such a question when he knows he has screwed his interview.

Me: Okay Sir, Have a nice day ahead.

And I left the room with a long face. I was dejected because he didn’t ask me a single question on the projects which I mentioned on my resume. It was just 10 minutes interaction altogether.

I told my friend the complete story and told him that I am not gonna selected.

My friend was comforting me with his words throughout the journey back home that they do this thing to check your composure and temperament. He kept saying that you will get selected.

The result was announced in the evening through mails and I got selected.

Well, It was a huge surprise for me, but I was so happy.
