Algebra is one of the oldest branches of mathematics, dealing with number theory, geometry, and analysis. It is characterized by some as the analysis of mathematical symbols and rules, as well as the manipulation of these mathematical symbols.

Algebra also covers a wide range of subjects, from fundamental problem solving to abstraction studies. Basically concentrated on variables with unknown values. The branch of mathematics is concerned with variables and arithmetic operations performed over these symbols. These variables have no set values. In our daily lives, we encounter problems. Certain values are always changing.

Expression is a combination of terms that are combined together using mathematical operations such as subtraction, addition, multiplication, and division.

  • A constant is a number or numerical figure that has a fixed value.
  • A variable is a symbol with an unfixed value.
  • A term is defined as a constant, a single variable, or a combination of a variable and a constant combined with multiplied or division.

Examples of Expression in Algebra: 5x+5, 4x + 16, and so on …

Variables: A variable is an alphanumeric character that represents a numerical value or a number. A variable in algebra is used to represent an unknown amount of unknown values.

Most often, the alphabets ‘a’,’b’,’c’,m.n,’x’,’y’, and ‘z’ are used as variables in equations. The term variable refers to the value of another variable or equation.

For Example:

In equation,

4p – 12 = 24

p → Variable

4 → coefficient of p

12 and 24→ constants

‘-’ → operator

Identify the terms and their factors in 1 + x + x2

Solution:

Given : 1 + x + x2

here terms are :

1 = 1

x = x

x2 = x × x

so the factors are 1 , x  and x ,x  .

Question 1: Identify the terms and their factors in 6xy2 + 7x2y?

Solution:

Given expression : 6xy2 + 7x2y

Here, terms are 6xy2 and 7x2y

therefore the factors of above term are

6xy2 =  6 × x × y × y

7x2y = 7 × x × x y

Question 2: Identify the terms and their factors in mn + n?

Solution:

Given expression : mn + n

Here ,we will find factor of the terms are mn and n not the full expression

therefore the factors of above term are

mn =  m × n

n = n

Question 3: Identify the terms and their factors in 7y+5y2?

Solution:

Given expression :  7y+5y2

Here ,we will find factor of the terms are 7y and 5y2 not the full expression

therefore the factors of above term are

7y =  7 × y

5y2 = 5 × y × y

Question 4: Identify the terms and their factors in x3y+xy3+7?

Solution:

Given expression :   x3y+xy3+7

Here ,we will find factor of the terms are x3y ,xy3 and 7 not the full expression

therefore the factors of above term are

x3y =  x × x × x ×y

xy3 = x × y × y × y

7    = 7

Question 5: Identify the terms and their factors in y-3?

Solution:

Given expression :   y – 3

Here ,we will find factor of the terms are y and -3 not the full expression

therefore the factors of above term are

 y =  y × 1

-3 = -1 × 3
