How to Build a Rock Paper Scissor Game in Android Studio?

  • Last Updated : 25 Aug, 2021

Rock Paper Scissor (which is also called Stone Paper Scissor) is a hand game and played between two people, in which each player simultaneously forms one of three shapes. The winner of the game is decided as per the below rules:

  • Rock vs Paper -> Paper wins.
  • Rock vs Scissor -> Rock wins.
  • Paper vs Scissor -> Scissor wins.

In this game, the user will be asked to make choice and according to the choice of user and computer and then the result will be displayed along with the choices of both computer and user. In this article, we will be building Rock Paper Scissor Game in Android Studio using Kotlin and XML

Step by Step Implementation

Step 1: Create a New Project

To create a new project in Android Studio please refer to How to Create/Start a New Project in Android Studio. Note that select Kotlin as the programming language.

Step 2: Working with the activity_main.xml file

Navigate to the app > res > layout > activity_main.xml and add the below code to that file. Below is the code for the activity_main.xml file.

XML

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<android.support.v7.widget.LinearLayoutCompat
    xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
    android:layout_width="match_parent"
    android:layout_height="match_parent"
    android:orientation="vertical"
    tools:context=".MainActivity">

    <TextView
        android:layout_width="match_parent"
        android:layout_height="wrap_content"
        android:gravity="center_horizontal"
        android:text="Rock Paper Scissors"
        android:textColor="@color/black"
        android:textSize="34dp"
        android:textStyle="bold" />

    <TextView
        android:layout_width="match_parent"

        android:textSize="30dp"
        android:textStyle="bold" />

    <ImageView

After writing this much code our UI looks like this:

Step 3: Working with the MainActivity.kt file

Go to the MainActivity.kt file and refer to the following code. Below is the code for the MainActivity.kt file. Comments are added inside the code to understand the code in more detail.

Kotlin

import android.support.v7.app.AppCompatActivity
import android.os.Bundle
