Difference between Rules and Methods

Specific statements that inform what must and must not be done are known as Rules. They are formed to maintain, regulate and control the working environment.  They are rigid and do not allow flexibility. If rules are violated, then strict disciplinary actions are taken. It reflects decisions that certain actions must and must not be taken. They are the simplest type of plan which do not require changes from time to time. 

The prescribed process in which a particular task or activity is performed as per the objective is known as Method. It provides standardized steps to perform a task. Methods avoid confusion and ambiguity and vary from task to task. Selection of the proper method saves time, and effort and increases efficiency.

Difference between Rules and Methods:

Flexibility	They are rigid with no scope for deviation.	They are comparatively flexible.
Application	They are applied to humans in order to achieve discipline and order.	They are applied where manual and mechanical ways of doing work are required.
Example	Rule of ‘No photography’ in a painting exhibition.	There are different methods of training: On the job training and Off the job training.
