Websites and web applications provide a number of services to ease people’s life by simplifying complex work. Development of these websites and web applications requires a large amount of time along with different resources. To simplify the development work researchers launched frameworks that contain all the necessary development tools in a single place. Zend and CakePHP are two of the widely used frameworks. So let’s compare them.

What is CakePHP?

CakePHP is an open-source, MIT-licensed PHP framework developed by Cake Software Foundation. It is based on HMVC (Hierarchical Model View Controller) architecture which follows a functional event-driven programming paradigm. It is a cross-platform software that was launched in 2005 and is available in different languages.

Advantages of CakePHP

  • It has an inbuilt validation model which saves a lot of time.
  • It has backward compatibility means it supports old CakePHP versions.
  • It has a built-in template Engine.
  • It supports crud generators.

Disadvantages of CakePHP

  • It supports only single-way routing.
  • Updating default routes is complex and time-consuming.

What is Zend Framework?

Zend is an object-oriented PHP framework developed by Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmans. It is an open-source framework that uses an MVC pattern for building stable applications. It allows developers to use API from different sources like Google, Amazon, Yahoo! etc. It was first launched in 2006 and its stable version comes in 2016.

Advantages of Zend

  • It offers Lucene search engine functionality.
  • It utilizes JSON for AJAX support to write API.
  • It uses encapsulation for implementing modularity.
  • It provides secure authorization through the Zend-auth feature.

Disadvantages of Zend

  • It does not have a custom coding feature.
  • Zend extensions are not affordable due to the high price.

Below is a table of differentiation between CakePHP and Zend:
